Come to Creative Germany!

Essen Coliery Winding TowerThis week –creative Germany! The Ruhr River valley was Germany’s industrial heartland. Now Ruhr 2010 is the European Capital of Culture. With 1,000 industrial monuments, 200 museums, 100 arts centres, 120 theatres, 100 concert venues and 250 annual festivals and fairs, the Ruhr Valley has truly come of age, a new must-see area of Germany that pleases the eye, entertains the spirit and engages the mind.

Collieries are converted to art galleries. Gigantic gas silos are indoor diving centres, and blast furnaces are spectacular observation towers. The 400- kilometre-long Route of Industrial Heritage takes visitors past many converted former industrial complexes, including the first UNESCO Industrial World Heritage Site, the Zollverein coal mine in Essen.

Reichstag, BerlinBerlin is Europe’s happening city, with a packed calendar of festivals and cultural events. Delight in the architecture – Berlin has many new landmarks. Most noted are the Reichstag and the Jewish Museum, that have already proven themselves as a draw for tourists.

ShoppersBerlin spawns fashion that is sometimes rebellious but it is at the same time elegant and sets trends. This attracts shopping tourists from all over the world. Fashion-minded visitors can revel in the latest creations from innovative German labels - Wunderkind, c.neeon and TalkingMeansTrouble, for example

Fashion Boutique A bird’s eye view of the fashion label “Made in Berlin“ can be obtained via designer platforms, such as Berlinomat in Friedrichshain or Berliner Klamotten in the Hackesche Höfe (Centre). Both these shops accommodate around 140 designers under one roof and display the full range available from Berlin’s fashion creators. Fashion shows, such as the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin give expression to this burst of German creativity.

Art at East Side GallerySince reunification, Berlin has become the epicenter of contemporary artistic creation and activity on the art market for all art enthusiasts. The gallery centres in the Mitte and Kreuzberg districts, along with other focal points throughout the city, enjoy an excellent reputation at the international level. Germany’s varied and contemporary gallery scene regularly promotes up-and-coming artists, along with the work of established young stars of the art world. The Berlin Biennale’s top arts curators, for example, will again launch new artistic talent in spring 2010 in various venues across Germany’s capital.

Filmstadt stereoscopic cinemaBerlin is not just a popular backdrop for filming and a production centre. Fans can practically intoxicate themselves with film during the International Film Festival – the Berlinale - in cult cinemas, museums, and a unique hotel. It has its own movie theater, and its styling evokes international stars like Marlene Dietrich all throughout its 182 rooms, suites, and apartments.
